Polymer Materials: GC Titan is considering the possibility of increasing the capacity under construction for the production of low-molecular-weight polyisobutylene. A new facility with the capacity of 10 000 tones is being constructed at AO Omsky kauchuk

The company plans to build a polybutylene terephthalate and film polyethylene terephthalate production facility with the capacity up to 80 and 280 000 tones per year at Titan-Polymer plant.

The project is planned to be implemented within three years and is aimed at meeting the country’s demand for film polyethylene terephthalate.

PBT – is a structural impact- and wear resistant plastic that is widely used in mechanical engineering, aircraft construction, electrical engineering and other industries. Despite its widespread use, polybutylene terephthalate is not manufactured in Russia. The world’s production capacities of the substance are more than 1.1 mln tones per year and are located in Europe, USA and Asian countries – primary in China, Japan and Taiwan.

According to Mikhail Sutyaginsky, it will take the company up to 3 years to implement the project: project documentation will be prepared over a 12-14 week period, and then it will take the company 2 years to build the facility. Part of the necessary infrastructure for these production facilities has already been built.

"Polybutylene terephthalate is a new polymer for Russia, and we hope that we will be able to meet demand specifically in the area of composite materials for the aircraft, ship and automotive industries, as well as where complex engineering plastics are required. All 80 thousand tonnes will be easily sold in Russia. Nobody is going to produce PBT yet, because it is a complex product in itself, but it is our future," Mikhail Sutaginsky said.

GC Titan also aims to meet 100% of domestic demand by producing film polyethylene terephthalate.

“In our sector we will meet 100% of the demand for film polyethylene terephthalate that is also imported. We will fully cover the demand for high-strength fibers, and plan to meet 100% of feedstock needs for tire cord – this project is being worked on,” Mikhail Sutyagisnky added.

Last December GC Titan launched the first phase of Titan-Polymer plant. BOPET film is now produced at the Moglino SEZ in the Pskov region.

The capacity of two lines of the new plant is 72 thousand tons per year. Currently, Titan-Polymer has mastered the production of five types of BOPET films, including transparent films with corona treatment, transparent films with chemical coating, transparent insulating films, and metallized films of various thicknesses.
